Lucie Rie, a leading 20th-century ceramicist from Vienna, Austria.
Although she had established herself as an artist, she moved to London in 1938, partly as a result of Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria. Unable to produce ceramics due to the effects of the war and facing financial hardship, she accepted an invitation from Fritz Lampl, the founder of Bimini, to work in the manufacture of glass buttons; she later went on to produce ceramic buttons in her own studio.
